The History Of Eton

The Bridge was opened in 1823 as a toll bridge. The post on which the tollgates hung now stand at the top of the steps on the windsor side. It carried the weight of buses and lorries for 147 yaers which eventually cracked it beyond repair and it was closed to traffic in 1970.

In 2000 Jeweller Wendy Ramshaw, designed the row of stainless steel bollards and viewing tower. See if you can decipher Eton in the brass plate.

Brocas Street on the left leads to the Brocas, an open meadlowland ideal for picnics, observing swans and the best view of Windser Castle.

Further along, King Stable Street on the right once housed carriages and stable horses which carried Royality from London.

On the left , No 84-85, the Crown and Cushion Inn, dates back to 1600 and has been an Inn since 1753. No. 47-49 on the right, the Victorian Letterbox was brought into use in 1856, the first all metal design and is still in use today.

No. 98 on the left, now Natures Purest, was built in 1520. It was and alehouse untill 1878, and then became the Three Lilies CoffeeTavern, a place workingmen and their wives could find refreshment without the temptations of the gin palaces and beer shops. In 1880 Eton had 19 public houses/taverns.

No. 102-103, on the left was built as a Fire Station in 1904, the rounded windows being doors. It had 2 horse-drawn engines, 1 steam and 1 manual. Note the stone panel with Art Nouveau of the Three Lilies of Eton.

The Christopher Hotel on the left dates from 1511 and was originally a coaching inn. No. 30 on the right was built in 1700 and has been a Chemist’s since 1826. The insignia above the door signifies the proprietor was the official warrant holder to the Queen Mother and now to the Queen.

St. John the Evangelist Church on the left dates from 1852 and is of Victorian Gothic design. It is now the local surgery and Eton College Sanatorium. A chapel remains on the upper floor.

On the right, Eton Porny School was founded in 1800 by Antoine Pyron du Martre, French Master at Eton College. Anthony Porny being his anglicised name. At the end of the High Street, after Baldwin’s Bridge, stand the impressive buildings of Eton College. This famous school was founded in 1440 during the reign of Henry VI.
